INTRODUCTION

The Enchanted – a promenade play about loss in climate crisis

The Enchanted is an audio tour for a walking audience – it’s an invitation for grown-ups to engage with magic of their surroundings, to feel the loss within climate catastrophe and to feel the emotions we fear in relation to this catastrophe of our own creation. It’s also a playful experience for everyone from the age 10 upwards that brings the audiences onto Hy-Brasil, a magical island with big black rabbits, magicians and fairies that come to life through spatial audio.

SHOW SPESIFICS

  • A site-sympathetic production that requires a walking route near a body of water (river, sea, pond – a spa!) Pre-set route with meeting point and an end point. During the walk, the audience listens to a pre-recorded spatial audio that creates the island of Hy-Brasil.
  • Audio length 25 minutes. Show length approx 45 minutes. Walk of 1-1,5 kilometers.
  • The show has toured islands in West Cork & Galway, Galway City, villages in Cork. It’s adaptable for different locations.
  • 2 performers, one of them can be local. This adds one extra day for rehearsals before first show in any location.
  • We bring everything with us, including the headsets.
  • Current audience capacity 20, can be increased with extra silent disco headsets.
  • 2-3 shows per day.
  • Daily rates & weekly rates can be agreed for performances.
  • Suitable for children from the age of 10+, but parental advisory is recommended, as the themes are quite dark: there is talk about the world ending.
  • The audience walks slowly through sometimes rough terrain. We can facilitate an accessible performance where the audio is experienced seated by a body of water if this is of interest.

The Enchanted Island was developed with the support of Arts Council of Ireland, and through Remote Control residencies #2 and #3 in 2021 and 2022 with Galway-based Brú Theatre, and MAKE 2022, an artist development programme and residency initiative of Cork Midsummer Festival, Dublin Fringe Festival, Project Arts Centre and Theatre Forum.
